I heard a cool talk by Christopher Moore today:

Perception, Cortical Dynamics, and the Hemo-Neural Hypothesis.extended abstract )

Tenth International Conference on Cognitive and Neural Systems:

http://cns-web.bu.edu/cns-meeting/2006schedule.html

This review consists of 3 parts:
1) Plenary lecture: Ken Ford (Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition)
"Toward cognitive prostheses"
2) NSF Science of Learning Centers program and how its impact feels at the conference
3) Various results (mostly reviewed in my LJ already)

1) Eyeglasses as an example of a brilliant ocular prosthesis: human-centered, fit for a particular person, etc, etc. Ford wants to make systems that can be regarded as cognitive or perceptual prostheses..

1.1) OZ cockpit display (the starting example):

we can have this aircraft instrument panel

In continuation of the yesterday's topic. Jonathan Cohen from Princeton and U. of Pittsburg claimes that the level of norepinephrine produced by LC (Locus ceruleus) serves as a switch between exploitation and exploration modes.

On monkeys: exploitation mode: low LC activity, phasic mode of firing of LC neurons; exploration mode: high LC activity, tonic mode of firing of LC neurons, a lot of norepinephrine, pupils dilation.annealing paradigm )

There is too many notes related to 10th ICCNS conference to be made. So I'll probably keep them here and will make digests in the main journal once in a while.

Various retrograde amnesia effects are well known. James McGaugh of the University of California at Irvine demostrated the effects of retrograde memory enhancement if norepinephrine is increased after a learning experience (via stress or some other mechanism, like direct injection of norepinephrine or cortisol, or stimulation of the BLA (basolateral complex of the amygdala).Read more... )
