People are saying it's becoming easier to do one's own gadgets in recent years. I was given a couple of cool references related to this:

"Hack a Day", for the ideas:
http://hackaday.com/

and "SparkFun Electronics", for parts:
http://sparkfun.com/

I am not sure that I can do any of this yet, given my "great talents".

But then if someone would have told me a year ago that I'll be playing piano or making my own ceramics, I'd be very surprised, and yet I have done quite a bit of both in the last few months. But I had very good teachers in both cases.

I wonder whether there are teachers running electronic labs around here...

BTW, do you know if the following Dec.2008 prediction/conjecture about the number of new startups turned to be correct?

VC funding will probably dry up somewhat during the present recession, like it usually does in bad times. But this time the result may be different. This time the number of new startups may not decrease.

On the other hand, speaking about customer service and outages in our current Matrix...

This is a post where I'll write various non-sense (under cut, and I'll keep editing it for a while). Also I am setting a default to screen comments in this post.

:-) Since every post should contain something cool above cut, here is the link to a cool animation blog, which I just learned about:

Trying our new camera in Jamaica Plains today:

10 more photos )

Originals are available here (and are really large, this is Canon PowerShot SX20 IS, so they are a few megabytes each, 4000x3000 pixels).

There was a strange "contact trip effect" with this camera. It is known that when one takes photos, one also sees more details by one's eyes afterwards. However, it seems that after taking more photos with a high-resolution, high-zoom camera, the effect is stronger, than with a less powerful camera -- and this is really weird! To have a synchronization effect with another person is one thing, but to have a synchronization with a camera?

I've got myself a new small netbook.

So it looks like no internet holiday for me during my upcoming trip to Las Cruces, New Mexico in a week or so:

Stocks seem to be currently priced about right, historically speaking, in terms of P/E ratio:

http://captaincapitalism.blogspot.com/2008/10/stock-market-is-about-where-it-should.html

The question is however, whether they'll go well below red line, like they did after other periods of being overpriced..

Squibs

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squib_%28linguistics%29
"In linguistics, a squib is a short article that is intended to ignite thinking and discourse by others on topics of theoretical importance - e.g., see MIT Press's journal, Linguistic Inquiry. Often, squibs outline anomalous data but do not suggest a solution. A squib may also develop a minor theoretical argument.

A particularly interesting variety of squibs are the so called snippets, which are "the ideal footnote: a side remark that taken on its own is not worth lengthy development but that needs to be said". The online journal Snippets is dedicated to this type of squib."

We need those in the other fields too..

Meanwhile, I am trying a strange "diet", based purely on a mild "neural hack". Ask me in four weeks whether it works:
